Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements from captain Ben Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made those words in several conversations in the wake of his team's defeat in the second Ashes series against the Australians earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

However, after Crawley scored 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "weak men" observation subsequent to his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The team subsequently took a break to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his team had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay alive in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the guidance from Stokes and coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," noted Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat entering this game."

Australia Close of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side 207-6 chasing a daunting target of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia need just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 lead with three Tests.

A loss will extend the English team's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes series defeat.

This series is set to be decided in just eleven days of play – with England losing the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," said Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a very, very good side. It was always going to be tough touring here to face them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Place In Question

Although the opener's innings in the third Test probably answers questions about his short-term place in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in England's second knock on Saturday, extending his poor record versus the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and averages 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

But, Crawley said any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is talk from the outside. There's no chat like that on Ollie amongst the players," he finished.
