The former Brazilian president arrested after being deemed a risk of fleeing

Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.

The ex-president was convicted of plotting a military coup in last fall and sentenced more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he was staying under home detention pending court reviews.

Top Judicial Official the presiding justice said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" emerged.

This encompassed attempting to break his ankle monitor and a summons to a demonstration that could enable a possible escape.

In a filing authorising the arrest, the judge said intelligence from the unit overseeing Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's "intention to break the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his escape.

This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.

His child, his son Flávio, who serves as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his followers near his father's house to take place on the weekend.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on online platforms on the previous day: "Are you going to fight for your homeland, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your settee? I invite you to battle with us."

He said the gathering would be so supporters could "pray for his well-being and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our nation."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the judge's determination was the possibility of his transfer to embassies near the residence, considering that the probes revealed a history of planning to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.

The court filing emphasizes that the United States embassy in the capital, Brazil's capital, is positioned around 13km from Bolsonaro's home.

His judicial problems have drawn the ire of fellow right-wing populist US President President Trump, prompting him to enact a fifty percent tax on goods coming from Brazil.

He is being kept in a national police facility in Brazil's capital city and will undergo a imprisonment assessment on Sunday.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on the previous day that the his legal team asked the High Court to permit him to complete his entire prison term under domestic detention, with digital surveillance.

They also petitioned that the former president be authorized to exit his dwelling for healthcare, saying he demanded regular treatment for lung conditions and other health problems.

Context of Sentencing

Bolsonaro was found guilty of leading a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the national vote to his political opponent, President Lula.

High Court judges said that he knew of a plot which involved plans to kill Lula and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing the former president's case.

The conspiracy was thwarted because it didn't receive the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. His successor was inaugurated without incident on 1 January 2023.

But a week later, on the eighth of January, thousands of his backers attacked and damaged official structures in the federal district, Brasília.

The security forces intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were detained.

The justices found that the protesters had been incited by him whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, restore order and bring him back to power.

At the moment, his attorneys called the decades-long sentence extremely harsh.

He was also barred from campaigning for office until 2060 - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was intended to stop him competing in the next presidential race.
