Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional diet and exercise plans.
Research printed in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Individuals buying these drugs should be informed of the potential of fast weight regain when the treatment is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.
Weighing Treatments
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with older methods.
Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through dieting usually see a more gradual weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Understanding the Fast Regain
Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the jabs explains the accelerated weight return.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Condition?
Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians contend that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.
This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the long-term nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Testimonies
Users who have come off the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"It was like a switch flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," described an individual.
The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Significant Interest
Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.
- Adoption is higher among females than men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, experts stress that while these medications are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success likely depends on ongoing behavioural management.
