It is devastating’: the way thirty captive beluga whales are being used as bargaining chips in dispute over inhumane treatment.

Jelly Bean’s daughter Bertie is an adorable little “sweetheart”. The whale Orion – called “Onion Ring” – is a big but fiercely protective companion. Zephyr has “endless energy” and wiggles like a worm. Lillooet the beluga is the “biggest cuddle bug” with a heart of gold.

A group of thirty captive marine mammals in a Canadian amusement park have been entangled in a tussle between a shuttered park, public officials and animal rights activists.

But those working directly with the whales say the heated discussion over their future often overlooks the individual traits of the whales who, after growing up in confinement, have been closely studied by the caretakers who see them each day.

After the national authorities prevented the sale of the belugas to China, the controversial facility near the famous falls where they are held warned to end their lives unless the government funds the upkeep of their care. Canada’s marine resources official has denied that request, placing the 30 whales in an increasingly precarious situation.

Intelligent Marine Mammals

Researchers say that beluga whales’ neural makeup, along with their sound replication, intellectual tasks and social skills indicate they are remarkably smart animals – something one caretaker observed personally.

Burgess spent three years as a marine mammal specialist, a job that required earning the trust of the sea creatures.

“Developing those relationships over time takes a lot of regularity and a lot of affection. At the outset, they’re very unsure of you,” she said. “Over time, you gain mutual trust. And they start being more trusting with you. It’s just so extraordinary and gratifying.”

The trainer knew the whales were very smart, but she says she was even so surprised by the details and quirks in their dispositions. She formed a particular love for a pair of whales with contrasting personalities.

“One whale selected me. Cleo made me earn it,” she said. “Each changed the way I perceive relationships.”

Public Concerns and Facility Decline

Burgess’s relationship with the whales evolved against a context of growing public opposition to their confinement.

During her time at the park, multiple belugas and the park’s one orca, Kiska, died. In all, nineteen belugas have perished at the park since recent years, a statistic which the park links to natural mortality, but which activists say reflects the substandard environment in which they were maintained.

The park did not operate to the public over the recent season, but the former trainer says she witnessed firsthand consequences of the shutdown. “Concrete is deteriorating from the enclosures because they’re in disrepair and not being fixed. The whales are exploratory and so they pick it up and move about with pieces in their jaws. It’s upsetting to see.”

The park did not comment to a inquiry, but previously asserted: “The whales … obtain far superior health care and 24/7 attention than any human in the United Kingdom, or anywhere else.”

Uncertain Future and Potential Resolutions

Burgess was fired from the park in recent months following the demise of a beluga, an unwell beluga the employees had to humanely kill. She said the park thought information of the death were leaked to the media and she was released not long after.

The lack of clarity over the whales’ fate has left Burgess and staff members in distress. She says the park’s threat to euthanize its whales is a negotiation tactic and is a “extremely difficult” endeavor, adding any attempts to euthanize even a individual beluga would require “significant staff”, vehicles and specialized tools.

“It’s impossible in hell the staff would ever do it,” she said.

Burgess advocates for requests for the whales to be taken right away from the park, with its crumbling tanks and reduced personnel.

In recent months, Canada’s government official rejected a request to transfer the whales to an overseas location.

“To approve the application would have meant a ongoing life in captivity and a reversion to public entertainment,” the minister wrote. “As Canadians, we know that whales are meant for the ocean, not in enclosures for our amusement. I could not in ethical standing permit an export that would prolong the treatment these belugas have suffered.”

But the former trainer said the official’s remarks reflect a broader incorrect perception of the facts of living conditions for belugas raised in confinement.

“The society needs to realize these are whales that have existed solely in enclosed habitats and they will need ongoing assistance for the rest of their years,” she said. “The public just don’t comprehend that it’s not as simple as saying ‘shut it down’.”

Alternative Habitat and Ongoing Debate

As authorities struggle to find a resolution, proposals have emerged, some of which have questionable practicality. An idea called for the belugas to be let go into the open waters of Canada’s north – where whales are a important part of sustenance for Inuit communities.

A proposed protected area in the region of Nova Scotia, which recently received government approval, has proven highly debated. The prospective location, which includes 100 acres of protected cove, doesn’t yet exist. Advocates remain optimistic that it could in time represent a permanent solution for some of the whales.

But, the former trainer says, among staff she’s discussed with, there is “doubts there” about what she said is “only an experiment” in the whales’ future.

Some experts say the prospect of a protected habitat reflects a changing attitudes away from captive facilities and could represent a viable solution in the coming months.
