The US central bank reduced interest rates on midweek, representing the second reduction in the current year during financial volatility originating from the government closure and tariff policies.
Move Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve
The decision to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.
Fed Statement Notes Job Market Shifts
In a statement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement reads. “Price increases has risen and remains moderately high.”
Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job
The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are on leave during the closure.
Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions
The Federal Reserve typically analyzes BLS data to determine labor market conditions, such as the number of employment gains added to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in early September, prior to the closure, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in August.
The number of positions created to the market in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.
Private Data Indicate Ongoing Decline
Though BLS was set to release last month’s job market report in early October, it halted its publication when the shutdown started. Private payroll firm ADP indicated recently that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman said earlier this month, which he had previously said stems from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase
Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still issued its inflation report for last month that indicated that prices are going up, albeit slowly. Costs increased 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
