30 Years Ago, Wes Craven and the Comedy Legend Collaborated for an Underrated Horror Masterpiece

The director's latest work may have breathed new life into the idea of African American undead, but the origins of this subgenre date back to the 1970s cultural movement. Among the most iconic early examples was the seminal 1972 movie Blacula. In that film, the actor's character is turned by Dracula and cursed with the demeaning name “Blacula.” Originally written as a caricature, Marshall elevated the part into something majestic, giving his figure an historical origin as Mamuwalde, a noble royal from Africa.

Decades later, Eddie Murphy appeared to draw inspiration from his predecessor, enriching his own character's mythology in Wes Craven's interpretation on the African American horror niche: Vampire in Brooklyn. Murphy's Maximillian is a descendant of Dracula whose forebears escaped to Egypt, and later to the Bermuda Triangle, after being hunted to the edge of annihilation. Vampire in Brooklyn demonstrates that tales of African American undead can be funny, frightening, and intellectually stimulating all at once, earning its place in the canon by juggling all three while respecting the heritage of the category.

Released three decades back on October 27th, 1995, Vampire in Brooklyn is now available on a popular platform, making it an must-see if you want a little comedy with your scares this spooky season.

A Tale of Two Cities

Similar to the royal character in Coming to America (Murphy's classic from 1988), the vampire lead is drawn to New York City. But rather than journeying from Zamunda to Queens, he arrives from the Bermuda Triangle into Brooklyn, seeking to locate and ensure the continuation of his vampire lineage with an offspring of his tribe.

The character makes his entrance in New York aboard a phantom vessel whose crew has been inexplicably killed, a nod to Nosferatu. The vessel is found by ship inspector Silas Green (the comedian) and his nephew Julius Jones (the actor), two of the most humorous personalities in the movie. Silas then witnesses a black wolf leap from the ship, dart into an alley, and morph into a man — reminiscent of the iconic routine from the extended Black or White video. Funky Blaxploitation-style music starts, setting the tone for a film that expertly mixes horror and humor.

Creative Visions

Recently after his last installment in the Nightmare on Elm Street series, the director was eager to move beyond his horror reputation and make a more blended comedy (his next film after Vampire in Brooklyn was Scream, which exploited horror tropes for both laughs and genuine scares). Meanwhile, Murphy aimed to defy assumptions by diving into a pure scary movie rooted in vampire mythology. The conflict of those artistic aims explains the story's detailed beginning of the protagonist's backstory and its generally sluggish start. But when the film hits its stride, it unfolds to its strengths — like its diverse ensemble.

Angela Bassett, as the object of Maximillian’s affection, plays detective Rita Veder, whose dynamic with her partner and love interest, detective Justice (the actor), adds a crime-drama edge to the narrative. Among Black cinema’s most acclaimed actresses, she gives a commanding acting with Payne, a well-known actor from the time. Meanwhile, the lead spends most of his screen time with Kadeem Hardison, forming a hilarious classic comedy pair as the actor's Julius Jones becomes the vampire's minion. (Seeing Julius descend further into his macabre part as his appearance deteriorates throughout the film is a highlight of how the star's comedic style elevates the humor and fear, even when utilized by the cast).

Supernatural Romance

When Max and Rita’s paths intertwine and Murphy and Bassett appear together, the film reaches its peak — the tension heightens, the fear escalates, and their darkly seductive chemistry becomes the focus. The vampire's scheme is to take away all Rita has in her life and then intervene. He murders her housemate, creates conflict between her and her love interest, and even uses Nutty Professor-esque prosthetics to disguise himself as a clergyman and weaken her faith.

As the plot unfolds, it becomes increasingly Gothic, featuring transformations and discoveries of heritage. This leads to a third act packed with seduction, as mortality and damnation hang in the balance. The movie ends with a stinger suggesting a potential sequel, one that could have happened had the film performed better. Vampire in Brooklyn made a modest box office return and got mostly negative reviews upon release. Over time, it found new life as a cult favorite, with reviewers later praising the filmmaker's work, the electric chemistry Murphy and Bassett, and its sharp blend of horror and comedy. The film shows moments of brilliance that could have been more prominent had everyone involved been in agreement on a unified vision, rather than delivering the tonal hodgepodge viewers saw. Still, Vampire in Brooklyn has rightfully earned its place in the canon of Black horror, an underappreciated but impactful film characterized by its daring approach and unforgettable performances.
